OpenAI’s Board of Directors Fires CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has announced a major change in its executive leadership. The organization’s board of directors has revealed that Sam Altman will be relinquishing his role as CEO and departing from the board. Succeeding him, Mira Murati, who has been serving as the Chief Technology Officer, steps up as the interim CEO with immediate effect.

The board’s blog post stated that Murati’s elevation to the role of interim CEO comes after a five-year tenure in OpenAI’s leadership team, during which she significantly contributed to the organization’s rise as a global AI leader. The board anticipates a smooth transition while they commence the search for a permanent CEO.

The blog post went on to say that Altman’s departure from OpenAI follows a detailed review by the board, which concluded that there were inconsistencies in his communications with them. They claim that it was this lack of transparency that they considered a hindrance to the board’s ability to effectively oversee the company, leading to a loss of confidence in his leadership.

The board, while recognizing Altman’s significant contributions to OpenAI’s inception and growth, also talked about the necessity for new leadership to steer the company into its next phase. They expressed strong confidence in Murati’s ability to guide OpenAI during this period of transition.

The composition of OpenAI’s board includes prominent individuals like Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology. Finally, the announcement mentioned that Greg Brockman would relinquish his role as chairman of the board, continuing his association with the company in a different capacity.

Here is what Altman had to say over on social media platform X:
