Although Apple introduced four new iPhone models today, this report focuses on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to Apple, these Pro variants are designed with aerospace-grade titanium, setting a new standard for lightness in the Pro lineup. The phones will come in four unique finishes: black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium. Apple states that customers can begin pre-ordering these models on Friday, September 15, with availability starting on Friday, September 22.
Design and Build
Apple claims that the new iPhones feature a strong yet lightweight titanium design, a first for the iPhone series. The new design also includes contoured edges and the thinnest borders on any iPhone to date. Both models are built with durability in mind, featuring the industry-leading Ceramic Shield on the front and the toughest back glass in a smartphone.
Action Button
Replacing the single-function switch used for toggling between ring and silent modes, the all-new Action button offers additional customization options. Users can now quickly access the camera, flashlight, Voice Memos, and other features with a press-and-hold gesture.
A17 Pro Chip
The iPhone 15 Pro models are powered by the A17 Pro chip, which Apple states is the industry’s first 3-nanometer chip. This new chip promises a CPU that’s up to 10% faster and a Neural Engine that’s up to 2x faster, enabling features like autocorrect and Personal Voice in iOS 17.
Camera Upgrades
Apple asserts that the new camera systems on both models are equivalent to seven professional lenses, all enabled by the A17 Pro chip. The 48MP Main camera now supports a new 24MP super-high-resolution default and offers three popular focal lengths—24 mm, 28 mm, and 35 mm. The iPhone 15 Pro Max features an all-new 5x Telephoto camera, providing the longest optical zoom ever on an iPhone.
Additional Features
- Night mode and Smart HDR have been improved for better image quality.
- New pro workflows allow for up to 20x faster transfer speeds with an optional USB 3 cable.
- Both models support USB 3 for data transfer speeds up to 10 gigabits per second.
- The phones come equipped with super-fast 5G and improved audio quality on phone calls.
- Expanded safety features include Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite.
