Microsoft’s New DIY Approach: Surface Device Replacement Parts Now Available

In a move that signals a significant shift in the tech repair landscape, Microsoft has announced that it’s now offering replacement components for its Surface devices directly through the Microsoft Store. This initiative, as announced (on the Microsoft Devices Blog) by Tim McGuiggan, VP Devices Services & Product Engineering at Microsoft, is part of the company’s commitment to delivering premium devices that not only boast great performance and design but also prioritize repairability.

Microsoft has always provided robust warranty and repair services via its support channels. However, recognizing the growing demand for more flexible repair options, the tech giant has been focusing on designing products that are easier to repair and expanding its network of Authorized Service Providers. The latest development in this initiative is the availability of replacement components for technically inclined consumers who wish to undertake out-of-warranty, self-repairs.

The replacement components, which include everything from kickstands and displays to removable solid-state drives (rSSDs) and batteries, are initially available for purchase in the United States, Canada, and France. Commercial resellers in all Surface markets will also have access through existing channels. Microsoft plans to expand this offering to additional markets in the future. By offering replacement parts directly to consumers, Microsoft is empowering users to extend the lifespan of their devices, reducing electronic waste and promoting a more sustainable tech ecosystem.

It’s important to note that while this initiative opens up new possibilities for tech-savvy consumers, Microsoft emphasizes the importance of following the instructions in the applicable Microsoft Service Guide or article when undertaking self-repairs. Tools needed for the repair are sold separately through iFixit.
